For most of the last decade, a Saturday night in Murrieta meant one thing between June and August: a blanket on the grass at Town Square Park, a food truck line, and a cover band running through the same rotation the amphitheater has hosted for years. It was free, it was reliable, and it was the summer.
Summer 2026 broke that pattern. The city now has three distinct weekend centers of gravity running in parallel, at three different price points, and residents are quietly triangulating between them.
Three venues, one Saturday night
The shift is easiest to see if you flatten a single July Saturday and look at what is actually available inside city limits.

None of these existed as a slate five years ago. The Plateau's summer series had been running for over a decade in a different form, the Hot Springs Resort had been closed for most of a generation before its recent reopening, and the city's own concert series has expanded its lineup. Together they mean the question is no longer "what is happening in Murrieta this weekend" but "which Murrieta do you feel like this weekend."
The Plateau, reimagined
The most interesting move belongs to The Nature Education Foundation, which relaunched the reserve's longtime summer art and concert series this year as Plateau Palooza. The five-week celebration of live music, fine art, specialty food and community at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve benefits youth nature education programs throughout Southwest Riverside County, and builds on the legacy of the reserve's longtime summer art and concert series with new experiences, expanded programming and an enhanced festival atmosphere.
The opening night on June 27, called Lemonade & Canvas, sold out before the rest of the calendar had a chance to breathe. The evening featured an outdoor art showcase highlighting the work of 35 local artists, including, for the first time in the event's history, talented scholastic artists from local high schools. That last detail matters more than it sounds. A 26-year-old art show that has finally opened space for Murrieta and Temecula Valley high schoolers is doing something the city's other summer venues cannot: it is training an audience that will stay.
The Saturday concerts that follow are the part most residents will actually attend. Beginning July 11, guests can enjoy Southern rock, country, 1980s favorites, and the iconic sounds of 1969 performed by popular local bands including James Kelly Band, Cheeze Whiz, The 1969 Band and the local country favorite Pushin' Daisies. The event takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve in Murrieta. General admission tickets are $45 per person and must be purchased in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the gate. General admission guests must bring their own chairs.
The friction is deliberate. Chair-BYO, advance-only, capped attendance. It is the opposite of the come-as-you-are lawn scene at Town Square, and it is why the Plateau nights feel like a different city than the one you drove through on the way there.
Town Square is still the anchor
None of which means the free series has lost the plot. Murrieta's Summer Concert Series returns to Murrieta Town Square Park & Amphitheater for a season of live music, local food vendors, and family-friendly fun under the summer sky. The concerts run from 7:00–9:00 PM, are free, and welcome blankets, lawn chairs, dinner from local vendors, and well-behaved, leashed dogs.
The 2026 lineup is denser than usual:
- Quel Bordel — Southern California's high-energy party band, with a dynamic mix of rock and pop hits
- Catch A Wave — the original striped-shirt Beach Boys tribute out of Los Angeles
- The Police Academy — Southern California's tribute to The Police and Sting, recreating the sound that made the band one of the most influential of the late '70s and '80s
- Chris Lozano Band — country, headlined by a vocalist with range from Josh Turner to Keith Urban
- The Cheez Whiz Band — an 80s cover band featuring performers pulled from top Southern California 80's bands, with costume changes, props, sound effects, and choreography
The genuinely useful thing about Town Square in 2026 is not the acts. It is that the amphitheater has become the fallback plan for the nights when the Plateau is sold out and you did not book far enough ahead. Same Saturday, half the drive, none of the ticket. Two of Southern California's tribute-band circuit stalwarts, Cheeze Whiz and its near-twin The Cheez Whiz Band, are on both calendars this summer. If you missed one Plateau night, you can catch a cousin of it at Town Square the next weekend.
The one Saturday that will absorb the city
The pressure point on the calendar is June 27. Murrieta's 35th Annual Birthday Bash on Saturday, June 27th, 2026 at California Oaks Sports Park begins at 2:00 PM and includes a full day of family-friendly fun, vendors, live entertainment, and activities for all ages. The Birthday Bash runs from 2 PM to 9 PM and packs in a Kid Zone, a Firefighter Hosedown, local vendors, live music from an opening act and a headlining band, and a fireworks show at 9 PM that closes the night.
That is the same Saturday Plateau Palooza opens with Lemonade & Canvas at the Reserve, and the same evening the city's Concerts in the Park calendar picks up. Three anchor events, one night, one town. The residents who have figured this out are treating June 27 as a full-day rotation: afternoon Birthday Bash with kids at California Oaks Sports Park & Pool at 40600 California Oaks Road, hand off to a sitter, drive up to the Plateau for wine and the art show.
The other June date to hold is the week before. The Fifty-Fifth Annual Father's Day Car Show is on Saturday, June 20, 2026 from 2–8 PM at California Oaks Sports Park with classic cars, family fun, vendors, awards, and live music from ZZ Nation. Kids ages 5–12 are invited to participate in Murrieta's Second Annual Hottest Mini Wheels Contest during the Father's Day Car Show, entering their favorite Hot Wheels or Matchbox vehicle for a chance to win "Best in Show," voted on by event attendees.
A 55-year-old car show is not a "new thing to do." What is new is that it sits inside a calendar dense enough that residents are now actively choosing between simultaneous city-run events, which was not a problem Murrieta had ten years ago.
The Hot Springs math
The quietest recalibration of the summer is happening off the concert grid entirely. Since the resort reopened, day passes are discounted up to 35% with qualifying local ID, running Mon-Fri at $59, which changes the arithmetic on what a Murrieta Friday night looks like. Sixty dollars gets a resident into fifteen outdoor geothermal pools and dinner at Talia Kitchen without leaving the 92563 ZIP.
The Relaxation Terrace Pass, an adults-only tier, starts at $139 and includes access to seven additional geothermal pools plus six adult-only pools on top of the standard day-pass amenities, per the resort's booking page.
The comparison worth holding in your head: two Plateau Palooza tickets run $90 before parking, a Hot Springs weekday local day pass runs $59, and Town Square is free. Three different Saturday nights, three different budgets, all within fifteen minutes of each other. The city has quietly built a tiered leisure economy that most residents have not sat down and mapped yet.
Where to eat before, between, or after
The dining scene has kept pace with the events. Murrieta has shifted from quiet bedroom community to a legit Inland Empire dining stop, with a growing lineup of local bistros, craft-beer kitchens, and global comfort-food spots alongside chains. Three that pair naturally with the summer calendar:
- The Mill, in Old Town Murrieta, is a neighborhood hub with brick walls, a casual bar, and a menu that works for everything from family dinner to date night, hitting American comfort favorites: specialty pizzas, pastas, steaks, burgers, salads, and appetizers built for sharing, including garlic knots, wings, and loaded fries, with a strong patio when the weather's good. Walkable to Town Square if you park once.
- Tonino brings a slightly more upscale Italian feel with warm lighting, a cozy bar, and white-tablecloth energy without being too formal, plus a menu of antipasti, house pastas, risotto, chicken and veal dishes, and seafood. This is the pre-Plateau dinner.
- RJ's is an updated steakhouse with a laid-back, Western-leaning vibe, big booths, wood accents, and an open grill feel, with sizzling steak platters, prime rib nights, grilled chicken and seafood, plus baked potatoes, mac and cheese, and veggies. Post-car-show, post-fireworks.
If none of those fit, North End Pizza Pub at 40119 Murrieta Hot Springs Rd, Ste. D101 pairs artisan pizzas with curated music and a cozy atmosphere, and it sits close enough to the resort to fold into a day-pass evening.
The rest of the shoulder season
Two more dates worth marking before the summer folds into fall. The 2026 SoCal Chef Open is happening on Mon 10 Aug 2026 from 5:00 PM onwards at 24275 Jefferson Ave, and the Summer ClassiQ Affair is happening on Sat 05 Sep 2026 from 4:00 PM onwards at Monteleone Meadows in Murrieta. Both fit the same pattern the Plateau is running: ticketed, food-forward, sited outside the traditional downtown grid.
The story of Murrieta's summer in 2026 is not any single event. It is that a city that used to have one weekend answer now has a portfolio of them, layered by budget, altitude, and volume, and residents who plan a week ahead can string them together into something that actually feels like a season.
